After a traumatic leave from my dream job - teaching Junior High School Theatre - I returned to teaching Elementary School. It was hard. I missed my kiddos immensely. I missed my dream job, not to mention how traumatic it was to leave. After two years, I decided to accept the fact that I am an elementary school teacher by posting something positive that happened in my classroom every day. It started on Instagram and Facebook. It's now in blog form. Thanks for coming.

I have a new sixth grade bestie, and I’m pretty excited about it!
When her class was lined up waiting for their teacher she started asking me about musicals. She was pretty excited that she finally found someone who she could talk to about them and she was shocked at how many of her favorites (all of them, but one) I had actually seen, and even more excited when she and I started singing songs together.
After school, she gifted me her artwork. I freaking love it. IYKYK
Now, off to listen to Ride the Cyclone, one I’m sadly not familiar with, but is her favorite.

This actually happened Monday (January 29), and it’s for yesterday (January 30).
While I was acting like I was a pig; rolling around, crawling on all fours, eating my slop, and snorting…my pants split.
This happened a few times while at NLJH, but this is the first time while teaching with Granite.
I don’t *think anyone noticed, my shirt was long enough to cover it.
Anyway, since I’ve STRUGGLED posting the screen shots (Instagram REALLY sucks for posting pics), I’m just gonna go about this a different way….
I texted my family pictures of my split pants… then an amazing thread happened. They were trying to determine how I took the pictures of my ass. Here are the pictures.
The post-it’s are Aaron’s artwork. The college ruled paper is Teague’s artwork, combined with his science mind. The red butt is my split pants. Piper and Taryn were also in the thread.

Piper gave this game to me for Christmas. I have been using it as a filler lesson with Kindergartners, First and Second graders, because my schedule between the two schools is a little wonky.
But! Drama Teachers! I highly recommend, it so simple, and the littles have been eating it up. AND! I do it with them if they’re struggling and they think I’m the funniest teacher ever - like when I snort like a pig, or hoot like an owl, etc…

Today is the 100th day of school. Some teachers and students dressed up like 100 year olds. Apparently it’s okay that I didn’t, because I already look 100 years old👵🏻🤷🏼♀️.

I just want you to take a second and appreciate the middle names of these twins…both names suit them. Especially today while playing What’s That You’re Doing.

After six incredibly difficult classes, I was super nervous for my fifth graders to come in (they are NOT easy…not even a little), after a rough start (no surprise), we played MY version of Two Truths And A Lie.
Two Lies and a Truth
Three students are all telling a story about the same thing. Each student writes the “title” of their story and their name on a piece of paper:
“How I almost got kidnapped”
“How a chihuahua ate my slice of pizza”
“That time I cracked my head open”
“When I stabbed my brother with a fork”
“When I got stitches on my butt”
Etc…
I call three kiddos up, I say, “We are gonna hear the story about __________________________ .”
Then, the storytelling begins. After all three are finished telling their story, we vote for the Truth Teller.
This school has some pretty incredible liars! I mean storytellers. I had some really good laughs.

Introduction to Pantomime with 2nd graders
When they realized what Pantomime was, they were excited to be in an imaginary box like Mr. Mime from Pokémon.
I SO wish I could show you their faces because their expressions are comic gold.

Elephant & Piggie, Let’s go on a Drive
Kindergartners: Each group has created a Tableau of one of the following things: Map, Sunglasses, Umbrellas, or bags.
The challenge was to do a tableau on each level (high, middle, low).
Kindergartens always use their imaginations in the best ways…

This third grade class challenged me to do this…
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
It didn’t go well.
I can’t even kneel with my lower legs NEXT to my upper legs…what even is that? Then just lie down? Wut? How?
I tried. I gave it a valiant effort. My body doesn’t work like that. I just tumbled over. The third graders though it was freaking hilarious.

Sorry! I’ve been a slacker. Friday morning threw me off (pothole incident), then the Monday holiday. My brain was literally telling me it was Thursday…on Tuesday. Anyway, here’s one for you from yesterday.
I was introducing Three/Four Person Tableau, when I did this pose, I said, “Who would like to add to this picture?”
(Pointed at student raising hand)
The following all takes place while I am holding (Frozen) this pose:
“Okay, what am I doing?”
3rd grade girl: getting ready to eat!
Me: getting ready to eat?
3GG: (very affirmatively) Yeah!
Me: Okay…what exactly am I getting ready to eat in this pose?
3GG: I don’t know! A giant sausage?
3rd grade boy: BRUH! She’s up to bat!
He jumps in and pretends to be the catcher, the next student jumps in and pretends to be a pitcher, and finally another student jumps in and pretends to be the ball.
Thank God! That could’ve been weird.

The scene: 25 kindergarteners sitting in Actor’s Neutral on their stars. We are talking about Gerald, Piggie, and their friend the Snake (Can I Play Too?)
Kindergartener: Ms. Karlyn, do Snakes have bones?
Me: Great question! What do you think?
Another K: Balls? As in a penis?
Me: Snakes have vertebrae and ribs, that’s why they can move In squiggley lines.
AK: So NOT a penis.
Suddenly and luckily the kindergarteners started randomly moving and sounding like snakes.

At one of my schools, I got new classes. I taught half the school first semester, and now I have the other half. I had a class of 16 second graders. I was calling roll and when I called out her name, this little girl didn’t say ‘here’, she said, ‘Oh my God! Nobody has ever said my name right the first time!” Then, with a tear in her eye (seriously), she said, “Thank you.” I said, “You’re Welcome.”
I’ll tell you, I have the same type of reaction when my name is pronounced correctly. Those of us with *different names know this feeling all too well. We notice and feel seen when it’s pronounced correctly.
Here’s to hoping I say it correctly next week.

Today was the first day of our voice unit. These second graders are playing “Greetings your Majesty” speaking slowly, loudly, and clearly all while disguising their voices in hopes to trick our Royalty. It was a success, and these kiddos have very funny disguises/characters for their voices.
