These Kindergartners made their puppets today! Considering the fact that EVERYTHING has gone ‘not as planned’ for this unit…These puppets are freaking incredible! AND!!! One of the downsides of working at two schools is that sometimes I somehow (I blame menopause, among other things) forget things, like today when I went to pull out stuff I needed for my planned lesson and…it wasn’t there, so I had to scramble for something…I have my yellow bandanas at this school, so to the rescue they came… These first graders made connections (would normally use ribbons) with the bandanas. This is what they told me their creations were: Group 1 : An axolotl Group 2: An elephant Group 3: A banana So…yeah. I knew, even before I got dressed this morning, that the Valentines Day “theme” was gonna be a thing… I am not lying when I say that every single kiddo grades K - 3 who I had in my classroom today had something to say about my sweater or my earrings. The 4 - 6 graders are way to cool to comment on those things except for that one group of kiddos (you know the ones). I have velcro stars and velcro dots. The stars is where they sit when they first come in. I pull out the dots when we need to make a circle. After a game of Kids on Stage (literally so exhausted. It needed to be easy today), I asked my first graders to pull their dots up and hold them up in the air for me to gather… When I got to one of the boys, he looked at me and said, “Ms. Karlyn, I’m really sorry, but I farted on your dot!” I giggled. Then the whole class giggled. Then I set a ground rule; NO FARTING ON MY DOTS! We exploded into uncontrollable laughter. I may have gotten them a little riled up. I slept through my alarm this morning. Luckily Aaron had to go into the office, so when he was leaving at 7:55, he came in and said, “You going to work today?” The latest I can leave and still make it on time is 7:55. “Yes, what time is it now?” “8:00” “We’ll, I guess I better get going.” I texted my Principal to let her know I was going to be late. I haven’t done my laundry in like a month, so I put on an outfit that is entirely too big, brushed my teeth (I think I peed at some point), put my hair in a top knot, put my giant ass hoodie on - which I did wash last night - and left. No makeup. According to my phone, my ETA was 8:35, ten minutes before my first class… Well…traffic and weather made me arrive at 8:47. My third graders were lined up outside my door waiting for me! I said, “Holy Cow am I glad to see your beautiful faces this morning, let’s have some fun!” Then…a third grade girl asked, “Ms. Karlyn, why do you look lazy today?” “…we’ll my friend, it’s a long story, BUT it doesn’t matter because we’re going to play Two Lies and a Truth!” The whole class in unison “Yay!” Then, this note w/pencils was in my mailbox from the district instructional coach, AND my first gift from my secret valentine. We were playing Mumbling Murder Mystery when, I may have had a minor heart attack, falling to the ground in disbelief when I found out that in my second grade class, only TWO students knew who Bugs Bunny is. One knew him from Space Jam. The other said he has loved Bugs Bunny since he was ‘little’ because his family watches old LooneyTunes Cartoons together. This is Blasphemy! Blasphemy I say!
